7:00 pm – Program about the upcoming November elections with Richard L. Hasen,Professor of Political Science and Director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA School of Law. He is an internationally recognized expert in election law and co-author of leading casebooks in election law and remedies. Professor Hasen and Stuart Wolpert, EA Program Chair, will discuss the high-stakes midterm elections, how disinformation is poisoning politics, and what can be done to safeguard democracy.

  ​​​​Eddie Murphy as Harriet Tubman: Selfless, courageous, and deeply committed, Harriet Tubman (1822–1913) stands as one of the most important figures in African American and American history. Best known for leading countless enslaved people from bondage to freedom via the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman is brought to life by Eddie Murphy in this portrayal.

  The Myths and Realities of Entitlement Programs in our Aging Nation: Fernando Torres-Gil, Director of UCLA’s Center for Policy Research on Aging and UCLA Professor Emeritus of Social Welfare and Public Policy, will shed light about on-going debates regarding the financial dilemmas facing Social Security and Medicare. Conversation topics include the realities of an aging population, the future of entitlement programs for today’s elders and aging baby boomers, long- term care, and the caregiving crisis facing the nation. This conversation will be led by Daniel J.B. Mitchell, Professor Emeritus, UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management and UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs.

  This annual music program features piano recitals by two extremely gifted students in The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, who were selected by their UCLA piano professors. Performing on the University Club's Steinway B piano, will be Alessio Santolini Raggi, who is studying under Inna Faliks, Professor and Head of the School’s Piano Department and Hongbo Cai, a student from the studio of David Kaplan, an associate professor who holds the Inaugural Shapiro Family Chair in Piano.

  Cori Close, the Michael Price Family UCLA Women’s Head Basketball Coach, selected as the 2025 Naismith Coach of the Year, will discuss women’s basketball, her team’s program, and her teaching and mentoring of young women.
• Thursday, October 9, 2025 – Recording
  Ruth Iskin, art historian and author, will discuss her latest book Mary Cassatt between Paris and New York: The Making of a Trans-Atlantic Legacy.​​​​​​ Rather than defining her as either an American artist or a French impressionist, Ruth Iskin argues that we can best understand Cassatt through the complexity of her multiple identifications as an American patriot, a committed French impressionist, and a suffragist.

  Program: Conversation with Amy Rowat, UCLA Professor of Integrative Biology and Physiology, and Marcie H. Rothman Presidential Chair in Food Studies. She is also a member of the UCLA Bioengineering Department, Molecular Biology Institute, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Broad Stem Cell Research Center. Professor Rowat will discuss with Stuart Wolpert “Science and Food,” including her research on cultured meat; her innovative courses on science, food and society; and UCLA’s leadership in food studies.

  Program: Conversation with Ted Mitchell, President of the American Council on Education since 2017 the major coordinating body for the nation’s colleges and universities. President Mitchell and his team work closely with Congress, the executive branch, and the private sector to develop policies and innovative practices. His previous positions include among others, U.S. Under Secretary of Education (2014–2017); President and CEO of NewSchools Venture Fund (2005–2013); President, Occidental College (1999–2005); President, California State Board of Education (2008–2010); and at UCLA, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs (1997–1998), Vice Chancellor for Academic Planning and Budget (1996–1997), and Dean, School of Education and Information Studies (1992–1998). President Mitchell will discuss current higher education issues with Stuart Wolpert, director of UCLA Conversations, followed by an audience Q&A.
